Using Fireproof Insulation

An effective fireproof insulation can, when used properly, be strategically placed to protect a building’s load bearing structures. This can significantly extend the life of a building in the event of a fire, which helps to buy valuable time for any people to escape. Fireproof insulation has many uses and can be adapted to suit the needs of your space. Some examples of when to use this type of insulation include: between walls and roof spaces, as a shield for structural features in the building, as a fireproof cover for heated ducts and process pipes, or for creating a fire safe core for sandwich panel construction. When used in this manner, fireproof insulation prevents fire from spreading through wall cavities or along service pipes and internal cables.

Types of fireproof insulation

One of the most popular and easy to use choices of fireproof insulation is a fire-resistant expanding foam. This is a highly versatile type of fireproof insulation which can be used to fill large or small gaps requiring added fire protection. Coming in a pressurised can, once sprayed it produces a quick curing, expanding foam which begins to dry upon entering the empty space, creating a tightly compacted, semi-solid surface which can resist burning for several hours. This is an incredibly user-friendly method of adding fire protection to a vulnerable area, requiring little technical expertise.

Other, less permanent, options might also be used to give added fire protection to vulnerable areas. Fire Protection Pillows are one such product. These can be used to cover safety wires and cables in fire rated structures to protect them in the event of a fire. Generally, fire protection pillows are semi-solid, and filled with glass cloth, mineral fibres, and reactive agents which expand and harden when exposed to fire. Fire protection pillows will also be resistant to water and humidity penetration. Large fire protection pillows can also be used to cover heavier duty cables, as well as metal beams running within walls and underneath flooring. If used correctly, this type of fireproof insulation can add up to four hours of fire protection. Fire protection pillows are also an ideal choice given how easily they can be moved and replaced as needed, particularly in contrast to other, more permanent, fireproof insulation.
