The Incident of the Grenfell Tower Fire

The Grenfell Tower, a 24-storey block of flats in London’s Notting Hill neighbourhood, experienced a devastating fire in June 2017. More than 250 firefighters and 40 fire extinguishers were dispatched to the scene to stop the fire’s progress. 72 people lost their lives to the fire, while more than 70 were injured. 233 Grenfell Tower victims managed to escape the fire. It was deemed one of the worst fire-related catastrophes in London due to the number of resources and the amount of labour required to put out the 60-hour-long fire.

The Grenfell Tower had only recently been renovated after being constructed in 1974. The firefighters who assisted in putting out the Grenfell Tower fire reported that it started small but its spread was relatively quick and that it rapidly got out of control. The fire began due to an electrical problem in a refrigerator on the fourth floor. The new cladding and the exterior insulation are to blame for the fire spreading, as the air space between them allowed for the stack effect.

What Are Fire Safety Signs, And What Colour Are Fire Safety Signs?

A fire safety sign is a specially designed label or sticker that is used to alert workers and guests to any potential fire risk, offering instructions or providing information or instructions for equipment.

Seton offers a variety of fire signs in a choice of styles and materials including vinyl, aluminium, photoluminescent and self adhesive. Many of our single versions are also available as a pack to provide you with a cost effective price. See our Photoluminescent Fire Door Keep Shut Sign and 6 Pack Photoluminescent Fire Door Keep Shut Signs.

We also provide custom fire safety signs that can be made on demand and with a price and delivery to suit you. The most common colours for making these products are red, green and blue. These colours are ideal for this type of sign because they attract immediate attention in case of emergencies.

Fire Safety (England) 2022 Regulations And Inquiry Results

Under the recommendations of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry, the British government developed the updated Fire Safety (England) 2022 Regulations. The implementation of these laws began on 23rd January 2023. The following guidelines must be followed by all current and future owners of high-rise structures that are either seven storeys or have a height of 18 metres:
  • Give electronic access to the building plans and floor plans to the fire and rescue service (FRS)

  • Clear paper copies of the floor plans for the building and other crucial information should be left in a secure box that firefighters may access

  • All high-rise buildings should have visible navigational signs

  • Establish routine monthly inspections of the essential components of firefighting equipment and the authorised firefighters’ lifts in high-rise residential buildings

  • Notify the FRS if a fireman lift or other firefighting equipment is working for up to 24 hours

  • Conduct quarterly evaluations of all communal fire doors and annual audits of apartment entrance doors

  • Inform households in a meaningful manner about the need for emergency exits and fire safety measures

What Action Should Be Taken During A Fire?

The first thing to do when you suspect a fire is to evacuate the building and call 999 quickly. Also, while leaving the building, it is advised to yell ‘fire’ to inform those around you. Your belongings should be left, and follow the signs to locate the fire extinguisher and the emergency exit.

What Are The Fire Safety Regulations?

According to the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022, Wayfinding Signage will be needed on both high-rise residential and non-residential buildings in Britain from 23rd January 2023. In the Grenfell Tower incident, the stairwell platforms in the building were not visibly marked with the right floor number, which made it challenging for firefighters to discern levels while performing their duties swiftly, according to the Phase 1 finding of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry. The laws enacted by the government must be followed by all UK residents, particularly when they are designed to protect us.

Essential Information in the Event of A Fire

Our product range includes fire assembly point signs, fire extinguisher signs, fire action signs, flammable signs, fire alarm point signs and fire door signs, all of which are available in a wide range of sizes, orientations and materials to help you find the right fire hazard sign for your business. Use in conjunction with fire exit signs to ensure an important part of your fire safety system is in place.

Most business premises and buildings that are open to the public are covered by health and safety legislation that requires fire safety and emergency signs to be in place. To help you ensure that you are complying with the relevant legislation we offer a wide product range of signs to cover every element of a comprehensive fire safety plan.

A fire sign or fire warning sign is any piece of standardised, easily recognisable sign or notice that helps to support the fire safety within your site, fire signs use words and pictograms to quickly communicate fire safety practices to people on your site that aids both in the prevention of fires and action required if a fire alarm sounds.

Fire action plan signs, for example, raise awareness on site about the fire safety plan and exit and assembly process for the building. These are usually mounted in areas where people will have a chance to notice them when they are first familiarising themselves with their surroundings, providing them with essential information that can be used if there is a fire, such as to sound the alarm, and exit to the assembly point.

Fire alarm signs, fire hose signs and fire extinguisher signs are intended to draw attentionto the placement and operation of extinguishers and any other essential fire product so they can be easily located and used in the event of a fire. Fire extinguishers and fire alarms are both supplied by Seton. A fire extinguisher sign is usually a distinctive and eye-catching red and white colour.

Fire door signs can help ensure fire door retainers and equipment are used in the way intended, and shut after use to prevent the spread of fire in the circumstances of an emergency. Informational fire safety signs can remind people to leave the fire exit unlocked and unobstructed, to gather in a certain assembly place when an exit is necessary so that occupants can be accounted for to avoid using lifts in the instance of a fire exit.

See also our Lift Safety Signs including our attention-grabbing green and red In Case Of Fire Do Not Use Lift- Use Stairs Sign which features a do not use lift symbol, a running man, and a down arrow. Symbols such as a running man image are universally recognised and help reduce the risk that a sign isn’t understood.

Displaying A Fire Safety Notice in the Workplace

Different types of buildings are subject to different fire safety regulations, so it is important that you consult the relevant health and safety requirements so you can purchase and install the right signs.

For other safety signage, check out our product range here at Seton.

A sign will usually be required to point out the exit route and location of the nearest fire exit, as well as location and usage instructions for fire alarms and extinguishers. Depending on the nature of your premises, you may have to install further exit signs to help expedite employee and visitor actions in an emergency.

One such sign would be a sign that gives clear instructions on using an exit point such as our Push Pad To Open & Back Arrow Fire Door Sign or our Turn To Open Sign both of which include an arrow for immediate clarity. When an alarm sounds it can be a high stress situation and the advantage of a directional arrow or an arrow indicating which way to open a door is that no one is left panicking about what to do at that point. One exit door handle may need to be turned to the left and another to the right - having a sign with a directional arrow makes it instantly clear.

Another important consideration is a photoluminescent (glow in the dark) sign. A photoluminescent sign will glow a vivid green in the dark so it can still be seen even in low light conditions, such as electric light failure. Many are available as a single product or a multi pack for a lower price.

Variations of Fire Safety Signs

We have a wide range of self adhesive vinyl, wall mountable and 3D fire safety signs for both interior and exterior use. You can choose a single version or a pack for a better price. We also have self adhesive removable repositionable materials for easy moving. We have a range of fire safety Braille signs so you can be sure that those with visual impairments will also know what action to take in the event of a fire. We also supply photoluminescent glow in the dark signage that is clear even in case of electric failure or dark or low light areas due to smoke. All our signs come in a range of materials and styles allowing you to pick the right fit for your business.

Why Should You Invest In Fire Safety Signage?

Property owners will be responsible for any penalties in the event of a legal violation, which may include a steep punishment, prison term, and the freezing of the facility. The UK government has granted the owners of high-rise buildings plenty of time to install wayfinding signs to ensure the safety of their structures and the occupants should an unfortunate incident like the Grenfell Tower Fire happen again. The legal punishment for violations in this relation has yet to be announced.

FAQs

What Fire Safety Signs do I need for my premises?

As fire safety regulations can vary we would advise all customers to refer to the relevant legislation when deciding which signs will have to be installed. We have a huge range of different styles with a competitive price and fast delivery.

What material should my Fire Safety Signs be made of?

Safety signs are made in a range of materials to allow you to select that sign that is most fitting for each proposed environment and location. Consider whether you want to apply self-adhesive vinyl signs directly to the wall or to mount them using sign fixings. Self adhesive and self adhesive removable, repositionable are very popular products as they are easy to apply to a wall or floor with small or no effort and without the need for fixtures.

Factor in the available lighting where signs will be placed, as our glow-in-the-dark photoluminescent signs might be a better option in areas where signs need to be independently visible in low light or if there is a primary power failure. You may also need to install a tactile and Braille fire sign to ensure that information is readily available and clear to those who are visually impaired.

Where should I place Fire Safety Signs?

The location of a fire sign will be determined by the legal health and safety requirements for your site, the complexity of your fire plan and the layout of your property. They shouldn’t be placed too low or too high or obscured by anything. It may be helpful to draw up a plan of your premises including the location of your fire door, extinguisher and other equipment and exit point, and consult a fire safety officer to determine the right signs for your business, big or small.
